Gummarus was a Christian, born in the 7th century, and a son of the lord of Emblem near Lierre in Brabant (Netherlands). He grew up without learning to read or write but served at the court of King Pepin. Pepin raised him to a high post and proposed a match between him and a lady of good birth named Guinimaria.

Although both consented to the marriage, she was extravagant and perverse in her ways. Cruel, impulsive and unpredictable she abused the servants and withheld funds for their support. Life became a time of trials for Gummarus and for several years, endeavoured for her to change her ways. The couple remained childless.

He was called into service by King Pepin during a time of war and was absent for 8 years. Returning home, he found his wife had thrown all things into chaos and that few of the servants, vassals or tenants had escaped her severe oppression. She had further abused them and refused to pay their wages.

Gummarus made full restitution to them and tried to convert his wife to Christianity. Guinimaria appeared to be swayed by his patience and kindness and ashamed of her actions but returned back to her evil ways worse than before.

He left his wife and the noble life behind. He became a hermit, devoting himself to the Lord. He joined Saint Romuold and founded the Abbey at Lier, Belgium which later bore his name.

He is the patron saint of childless people, courtiers, cowherds, difficult marriages, glove makers, hermia sufferers, separated spouses, and wood cutters.

His feast day is October 11.
